According to a new study, people with obstructive sleep apnea are more than twice as likely to be involved in a severe car crash as those who don’t suffer from sleep apnea.

The study ( American Thoracic Society (2007, May 22) ) was conducted on 800 people with sleep apnea and 800 people without sleep apnea. Those who suffered from sleep apnea were involved in 250 crashes over a period of three years, while those who didn’t have sleep apnea only had 123 crashes during the same period of time.

The study shows that any factors that contribute to sleep deprivation, such as snoring and sleep apnea, increase the likelyhood of a severe motor vehicle crash.
